Character
History: Severus Snape was born on the cold morning of January 9th, 1958 to Tobias Snape, a Muggle, and Elieen Prince, a witch. His father was a rough, abusive man, and throughout his childhood Severus was routinely neglected by his parents, his father simply uncaring and his mother too afraid to anger her husband to help her son. It was somewhat of a miracle that Severus made it to the age of 5.
Severus was relieved when he got his letter to Hogwarts, managing to scrape by on used materials. He thought it would be a brand new and wonderful start, where he would be respected as a person finally. Unfortunately, his hopes were crushed on the train to Hogwarts his very first year. The group of people who would come to be known as the Marauders had already met, and they pulled an awful prank. Severus did not take it well, and from that moment onwards they became bitter enemies, the Sorting ceremony only solidifying the already built barriers.
He immersed himself in studies, gaining as much knowledge and magic as he possibly could, holding fast to the belief that knowledge is power, and it was during his first year that he found he had an affinity for Potions. He swiftly became the star of that class, earning further animosity from those around him. During the rest of his years at Hogwarts, the relationship with the Marauders deepened into mutual hatred, their offenses becoming unforgivable after The Prank, he passed his exams with flying colors, and he discovered the arts of Legilimency and Occlumency. Under the pretense of learning the latter, he retrieved books from the Restricted Section on the former, and managed to become proficient in both by the time he graduated.
During his earlier years at Hogwarts, he fell in with a gang of Slytherins, a sort of brotherhood, if you will, and every subsequent summer, he snuck out of his house, not returning for weeks at a time to run wild with them. Upon graduation and Voldemort’s first rising, this gang turned into the Death Eaters, swearing their allegiance to Lord Voldemort (nee Tom Marvolo Riddle).
Severus served faithfully for several years, but what finally made him question his beliefs was the murder of the Potters, which he was indirectly responsible for by bringing news of the Prophecy to Voldemort. When he finally reached a decision, he went to Headmaster Dumbledore, confessing his misdeeds and offering to spy for the Order. To convince Dumbledore of his loyalty, he allowed him to do the one thing he would never allow anybody else. Severus allowed Dumbledore to look inside his mind. Perhaps he showed him everything, perhaps not. He won’t tell anyone, not even me. In any case, Dumbledore believed in his reformation and allowed him to spy on his side, and after Voldemort’s defeat, he was allowed a position at Hogwarts as Potions Master and head of Slytherin House.
Severus taught in relative, sarcastic peace until yet another Potter invaded his life. Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. He developed a deep loathing for the boy upon sight, which, in his mind, was entirely justified by Potter’s later actions of idiocy. However, Severus has done everything in his power to protect the boy and keep him under the protection of Hogwarts, even not expelling him when he could have. That incident when Potter stole goods from his private stores is an example that still stands out in his mind. Oh, Severus knew, he truly did. It was written right in Potter’s eyes while he tried to give him an innocent look.
Severus is actually rather tired of saving the stupid boy’s life, as he has done so numerous times, at great personal risk, and has, each time, received no thanks. Not that he wants it. Certainly not. But sometimes he wonders if Potter could possibly be a little more intelligent.
A few years ago, the Dark Lord returned, and the Dark Mark burned again on his arm. He did not heed the call, and subsequently had to work very hard to re-secure his position with Voldemort at the behest of Dumbledore. Severus actually would rather have just disappeared, but he had no choice, his particular talents were once again needed and he could not refuse. About the reign of Umbridge, Severus has nothing to say.
This year, Severus returned to his position not as the Potions Master, but rather as the Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, a position which he has coveted for a long time, facing a rather interesting year.
Personality:
Severus is an angry person. He dislikes the world and himself, and takes it out on other people because he can. It isn’t all his fault, though. Throughout his life he has been put in nasty position after nasty position, and this has shaped him into the wizard he is today. Which is, in short, nasty.
At first meeting, Severus is blunt, sarcastic, rude, vindictive, and utterly unapproachable. He has made many a first year wet themselves, and he likes it that way. He figures that if nobody can get close to him, nobody can hurt him. And if nobody can hurt him, he is invincible. He’d like to believe that. Rare is it that something can get under his skin and bother him; he’s spent all of his life desensitizing himself. He is stronger than most, but with this strength comes a horrible weakness. If someone were to make him care about them, and something happened to that person, he would be devastated to such a degree that he might not recover. Thus, he never lets anybody into that inner sanctum of his soul. Nobody. Ever.
IF you ever get remotely close to Severus, you will find another side of him, which is well-hidden from the rest of the world’s population. It is no less sarcastic, but perhaps a bit less abrasive than his public face. You might be offered a quiet pastime, then again, you might be told to go the hell away. It depends on his current mood. Persistance will get you nowhere when he gets in one of his moods when nothing and nobody can touch him.
Defiance is not something he tolerates. And that is the final word on that subject.
That said, you should also note that he is not without kindness and sympathy. He is no Agony Aunt, but for some people he is willing to listen to your problems and dispense advice on them. If you do not want his honest opinion, however, then it is unwise to ask, as it most likely will not be something you want to hear, given he is highly adept at finding flaws and expressing his opinion on it in the most scathing way imaginable.
He does not tolerate those who waste his time. This ties in with the above paragraph. You may ask his opinion, but do not waste his time. He believes that he has far too little of it as it is, and any second that is not spent doing something productive is worthless.
Above all else, Severus’ privacy is sacred. Violate it, and you can expect, at the least, to have your own secrets drug through the entire wizarding population, and, at worst, instantaneous death. Dead men tell no tales. Severus specializes in humiliation, is a veritable master of it, in fact. If you dare to make yourself potential prey (read: if you dare to be born), then at least once in your term at Hogwarts you are bound to run into and be made victim.
Some say he blatantly favors Slytherin House, of which he is Head. He vehemently denies this. But ladies and gents, it’s entirely true. And he knows it. He figures that it is retaliation for Dumbledore’s favoritism towards Gryffindor and Potter. Potter. The boy makes him want to either physically be ill or strangle him with his bare hands.
Character Flaws:
Did I not go into that far enough in his personality? Very well.
Severus is blunt, sarcastic, unfriendly, mean, predjudiced, short of temper, quick of tongue, rude, arrogant, selfish, blatantly favors his House, I could go on all day. His flaws might bother him, but they don't because he simply doesn't care about other people's opinions of him. If the students wish to call him a slimy git, that's fine by him, as long as they don't do it to his face.
Role Play Sample:
Merlin, how he hated students. Well, that wasn't entirely true. He only hated students that were so self-righteous that they couldn't look beyond their own noses to see the obvious. His Slytherins were rather good at that, and so he didn't mind them so much. But Mister Crabbe and Mister Goyle... they tried his patience immensely, but their stupidity was no fault of their own. They just wouldn't be making it into his NEWTs classes. Mister Malfoy, on the other hand... he was closer to that boy than to any of his other students, partially because of his working relationship with his father, partially because the boy was a Pureblood who didn't expect leniancy simply because he was royalty.
He actually earned his grades, not that Severus was wont to give out grades when asked, threatened, or bribed. Actually, he was more likely to LOWER their grade a letter point. Maybe two, depending on the offer that was given to him. Rather disgusting, actually, that students would think that of him. But they did.
They always thought the worst of him. Oh well. Severus sighed mentally, stalking down the hallway as groups of students cringed from him. It was one part amusing, one part satisfying, one part annoying, and alltogether something he enjoyed immensely.
Turning the corner, the students didn't part fast enough, and one Hufflepuff girl knocked his shoulder. "Five points from Hufflepuff for obstructing the hallway." He said smoothly, not even pausing in his gait. Hmm... perhaps today would be a better day than usual.
